Those who aren’t familiar with the title, Bible Black is one of the most well-known Hentai video-game series. The game was first released on July 2000, and later on 2001 it was adapted to animation series by Milky Studio. The first series that came out was simply named Bible Black and it contained six episodes. Then a year later Milky Studio released two-episode long OAV series called Bible Black; Origins, which, as you can guess, told us just how all the mindfuck in the actual series had began. These two series were so popular that they even made a sequel to original Bible Black series called “New Testament”, and let’s not talk about that. After this Milky Studio gave us the last Bible Black series; another OVA called Bible Black Only + Imari Rape, which had three episodes, two episodes had ministories about minor-characters and the third episode was the ‘Imari Rape’, so yeah. You can guess what happens there.

So, there is background explained briefly and before we take a closer look at the series; yes this is hentai, hentai is ugly, stupid, degrading, boring and ewwwwwww. And Bible Black is no exception. It’s silly, but when compared to all other hentais out there; it’s actually pretty damn good one, and it actually has rather big fanbase! Whenever I ask recommendations for hentai series, someone is always surely to bring up Bible Black.

Why is it so good? And what makes it to stand out among the other hentais? Well, I can only speak for the animation series, since I’ve never played the games. But there are three different factors that makes this series good.

1) Animation.
Alright, hentai series hardly are masterpieces when it comes to animations. They are usually done with a very low-budget, they repeat same poorly done scenes all over again, the anatomy of women (and men) can be pretty bizarre and in the end it’s all just very clumsy and not pretty to look at. True, Bible Black has that very same problem at times, repeating scenes etc.  But here they actually have put effort to their animation! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hentai series with this kind of animation-quality, oh and I’ve looked.  Even when the quality of animation drops and gets lazier somewhere around the third episode, it is still quite impressive and beats most of hentai series that there is. And even though the poor quality in episode 3, it goes up back to good near the end. Animation in OAV’s is usually better and it stays decent for all the time. I’m not going to say that Bible Black is the best, when it comes to animation, but it certainly is one of the bests.

2) Characters
When it comes to hentai series the characters hardly have any kind of personalities outside of the few stereotypes; shy, innocent virgin and bold, sexually active megabiatch. Again, you can find these characters types from Bible Black, but if you look more at them, there’s actually plenty of well developed character’s with in-depth personalities. For an example; each girl in the picture above goes through some kind of life-changing event that affects to their personalities greatly, well alright. Shiraki (the curly blond from left) stays pretty much as the same during whole series. I’m not saying that these characters are the most interesting or well-round in all of anime but still, for a hentai standards they are damn deep (wow, I must sound like a broken record). But there is a down side to them too, which also has to do with animation. When you look at the picture above you will notice that GASP they look exactly alike! Yes, every woman in this series has an identical body and character design. Out of all female characters there is only one or two characters who have some differences in them, other than just the hair, color of the eyes or size of  breasts (which are always big). This same thing applies to men.  It can get pretty damn annoying at times– especially if you are watching this series for the first time, but I suppose you’ll learn to ignore it. If that’s good thing or bad, you decide.

3) And then the fact that this series seems to take itself seriously. As simple it is. The story and setting in Bible Black is pretty cliche; it’s about as different people gets taste of black magic. It’s fun at first as they think that they have control over the black magic and its powers, until in the end they find out that it’s the magic that has control over them. So yeah, the pretty basic story of people who get drunk from the power and then get lost in it. The journey to the human’s darker side is very used in hentai series but what makes Bible Black different from other series with the same theme, like Behind Closed Doors for an example. The animators, actors and writers are taking this seriously. It shows in the quality of the series, voice acting is as good as you can get from hentai series and same goes for animation. Script writers actually managed to keep story together avoiding all the overly used cliches or plotholes, it all actually makes sense (until New Testament came around). When watching the series you can actually see that the creators have given much thought to the story while creating the series. This series could almost pass as a ‘normal’ horror-anime series if the sex scenes were only done differently.

Anyway, I’ll stop ranting now and return to this with more details later when I’m taking a better look each series in chronological order! Maybe then you’ll get a better idea of what I’m just saying here.
